Demetre Mentavlos July 5, 1932 - October 17, 2017 Demetre Mentavlos, 85, of Stamford, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. He was born on July 5, 1932 in the village of Skoura in Sparta, Greece to the late Haralambos and Eleni Prattas Mentavlos. Demetre started his banking career in 1953 in England, then to Africa, Canada, and to the United States, settling in Stamford in 1959. He began his career here in 1960 with State National Bank, which then became known as Bank of New England, CBT and finally Fleet Bank. For a brief time, he taught Greek for Stamford Continuing Education at the UCONN branch in Stamford. He was an active member and past president of the Skoura-Varvitsa Brotherhood, an active member of the Greek Club of Stamford, and a member of the Parish Council of the original Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Stamford. Demetre also survived the pioneering surgery of a liver transplant in 1995. He enjoyed reading, traveling to Greece and Florida, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Konstantina "Dena" Simitakos Mentavlos of Stamford, his loving children, Helen Massari and her husband Anthony of Wilton, Katrina Tarzia and her husband Anthony of Stamford, Rita Hocter and Bryan Hocter of Redding, and Jill Zoumboulis and Dominick DiMelfi of Stamford, as well as his grandchildren Jonathan, Nicholas and Madeline Massari, Jackson and Austin Tarzia, Carlie and Emilie Hoctor, Nicholas, Dena, Demetre and Katie Zoumboulis. Also surviving are his siblings Maria Konstantinis, Ekaterina Panageas and Nick Mentavlos, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Demetre was also predeceased by his first wife lost to death, Jill Brown Mentavlos, his son-in-law John Zoumboulis, and his brother George Mentavlos. A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 9:20 a.m. for a funeral service to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Woodland Place, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a Trisagion service to be held at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Zoumboulis Children's Trust, c/o Mark F.
