VIRGINIA BEACH - Declan Patrick Lawlor passed away peacefully on July 18, 2017 surrounded by his family. Born on November 15, 1964, Declan was a loving husband to his life-long best friend, soul mate, and devoted wife, Kim. Married for 21 years, their "voyage" began almost 40 years ago on a summer vacation in Kilkenny, Ireland, Declan's birthplace. Declan's colorful life started at "the wall" and continued throughout the world where he invested deeply in the friendships of hundreds, and positively influenced the lives of the young people who he encountered along the way. Declan was an amazing son, husband, father, brother, relative, friend and man. Beneath his strong and humorous Irish exterior, he had a hugely tender and compassionate heart. He saw the best in people and always bolstered the least member in any given group. He regarded struggling souls as ones who only temporarily lost their way, and who were fully redeemable if they would simply not give up on themselves. He never gave up on anyone. Declan was the quintessential "immigrant to America" success story - a self-made man who arrived on a distant shore, and through hard work, determination, and true grit forged a comfortable and responsible life. While extremely proud of his Irish heritage, he loved America. Declan's faith life mirrored his charismatic personal life; witnessed by his daily words, actions and deeds. We are all confident he is enjoying a Guinness and a cigar with his father Mock while experiencing a heavenly sunset like the ones he often enjoyed from his dock in Gloucester, VA. He is survived by his wife Kim, his three sons Kian, Declan, and Burke, his mother Ann, his sisters Janet Marion, and Sharon, his brothers Tony and Michael, and sixteen nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Williamsburg on Monday, July 24th at 11:00AM. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Kelly Weinberg Foundation, at www.kellyweinbergfoundation.org , which offers emotional and spiritual support for those suffering from cancer.
