David Palmer Crabtree Community - David Riley Palmer, 62, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. David was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, the son of Margaret Nelson Palmer and the late Glen Cecil "G.C." Palmer of the Crabtree community. He was a 1972 graduate of Tuscola High School, where he was an active member of the 4H Club. He also graduated in 1976 from North Carolina State University and was a member of the Farm House Fraternity. The Palmer family were pioneers of the Crabtree community in Haywood County and David followed in their footsteps managing the family farm. He was a great outdoorsman, who loved to fish and hunt. For his conservation efforts, he received the Lawrence G. Diedrick Small Game Award. This award is presented annually to recognize individuals whose contributions aid wildlife that depend on early successional habitats. David was a member of Crabtree United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, David is survived by a daughter, Montanna Palmer, of Abingdon, Virginia; a son, Riley Palmer, of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Lynne Leatherwood of the Crabtree community and Mary Gaye Bumgarner and her husband, Mark, of Waynesville; a brother, Cecil Palmer, also of the Crabtree community; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at Crabtree United Methodist Church, 5405 Crabtree Road, Clyde, with Reverend Terry Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
