SOUTH DEERFIELD - David A. Karkut, 76, of South Mill River Road died Monday 1/9/17 at home. He was born in Northampton on July 31, 1940, the son of Michael C. and Sophia (Kulesa) Karkut. He attended local schools in Northampton and continued his education at the University of Miami (BA, 1965), then graduating from Western New England College with a doctorate degree (Juris Doctor, 1970). He had various jobs in his life, working as an electrician, social worker, child support enforcement, finishing his career as Senior Investigator for the Bureau of Special Investigations with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for many years. He was also appointed Bail Commissioner of Franklin County Volunteerism included serving as a Boy Scout asst. cub master and Pee Wee baseball coach. He cooked community meals and was a vestryman at St. James Episcopal Church. He took greatest pride in being a member of the Deerfield Lions Club for forty one years, serving as President and receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for exemplary community service. David loved his retirement years - ""every day is Saturday!"" - and could be found fishing for trout or downhill skiing and attending dancing and theater with family or friends. David loved to travel, including trips across the US, as well as to Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Poland (3 times), Russia, Japan, Canada, Alaska, and Mexico. Besides his beloved wife of 49 years, Patricia (Warchol) Karkut, David leaves a son, David, and his wife, Dawn, and grandchildren, Dawson and Eden of Vancouver, British Columbia; a daughter, Rebecca Karkut and Jason Owen of Northampton, MA; two sisters, Linda Ball and her husband Roger of Southampton, MA and Elaine Darr-Morton and her husband Wil of Belchertown, MA; a brother, Michael C. Karkut III and his wife Ann of Polk City, FL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. David was predeceased by a brother, Conrad Karkut and a sister Jean Dimos. Services for David A. Karkut will be held Sunday 1/15/17 at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall at St. James Episcopal Church, 8 Church Street, Greenfield with the Rev. Heather Blais officiating.
