Daphne K. DeFreest, M.D. February 25, 1932 - February 5, 2017 Daphne was born in Parnu, Estonia to parents Ada and Voldemar Kruustuk. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was 14 years old and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Brooklyn College before obtaining her medical doctorate from Syracuse University. While in medical school, she met Lynn DeFreest and they married. Daphne completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During residency training they had sons Jeffrey Wade and Eric Scott. After residency, they practiced medicine in Akron, Ohio. Daphne's parents lived with them and helped to raise the children while the young physicians established their careers. Daphne and Lynn later divorced. Daphne transitioned to a practice of integrative medicine until she retired. In retirement, she moved to Eugene, Oregon across the street from Eric and Melissa for her new position as grandmother to Nicolai James and Zachary Wade. In her spare time, Daphne enjoyed reading, journaling, writing cat stories, Tai Chi, poetry readings at Tsunami Books, and telling stories about her childhood years in Europe. Daphne is survived by her son Jeff DeFreest and his wife Kari of Ketchikan, Alaska and son Eric DeFreest and his wife Melissa, and grandsons Nicolai and Zachary of Eugene. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Sunday, February 12th at 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are invited to St. Mary's Episcopal Church or for the benefit of cats at the Greenhill Humane Society.
