Crystal Faye (Moore) Yeakey Horne
Crystal Faye Yeakey Horne, age 90, of Clovis, New Mexico died Monday, January 9, 2017, at her home in Clovis. She was born January 8, 1927, to Cova M. Phelps and Nellie Bragg Moore in Moberly Missouri. She completed 11th grade at West Park School in the Moberly school system, then attended Moberly Jr. College attaining an Associate's degree. At that time children went directly to the Jr. College instead of 12th grade. Every Sunday morning her father (Deacon Cova Phelps) carried her to Immanuel Baptist Church in Moberly, at which he taught Sunday school classes to adult men. He enrolled her in the primary department in 1932. She was baptized and joined the church October 8, 1935. As a youth, Crystal was part of a singing duo that sang in churches and at church events in the Moberly area. She later attended Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. During the summer breaks at Southwestern, she served as a missionary helper to the Tohono Oâodham (Papago), Maricopa and Pima Indian Communities in Arizona. She graduated from Southwest Baptist College in May 1946 with an Associate of Arts degree. She married Kenneth Clay Yeakey in March 1947, in Moberly, MO. She and Kenneth attended Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. From there Crystal and Kenneth moved to Fort Worth, TX, where they attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Crystal graduated (May, 1955) with a Bachelor of Religious Education degree. She was employed at the Seminary as secretary to the Dean of Education. After Kenneth's graduation (MEd) from the seminary, they served in churches in Louisiana, Texas and ultimately New Mexico at Central Baptist Church in Clovis. While in Odessa, Crystal attended Texas Tech University (1970). After moving to Clovis, NM, she continued her education at Eastern New Mexico University (Portales, NM), graduating with a Masters of Education degree (1972) with emphasis in Secondary Education. Later she received her certification in Special Education. She was employed by the Clovis School System for 17 years, where she taught special education at Gattis Jr. High. Crystal was an educator at church as well. Throughout her life, she wrote articles for national publications, materials for the Baptist Sunday School Board, Lifeway Press. She was a department leader and taught Sunday School classes in churches, taught seminars for the Southern Baptist Convention Sunday School Board, Baptist Convention of New Mexico, retreats for women, and was the New Mexico coordinator for Precept Bible Studies. Crystal led many Precept Bible Study teacher trainings and book study classes in churches throughout Texas and New Mexico. Crystal married Joel Horne in Texico, NM on December 25, 1994. After they were wed, she taught many retreats and seminars during their time as traveling evangelists. The consummate pastor's wife, she was very active in church work during their ministry service at First Baptist Church Dora, NM and FBC Clovis, NM throughout her lifetime. Moving her church membership as she moved from place to place, at the time of her passing Crystal was a member of Central Baptist Church, Clovis, NM. Preceding her in death were: her parents Cova Phelps and Nellie Bragg Moore, siblings; Carson Phelps (Martha), Helen Marie Phelps, Alma Murleen Kneisel (Jerry), Albert Eugene Phelps (Marie), a husband; Kenneth Clay Yeakey, and a daughter; Kendra Lennon. She is survived by: her husband; Joel Horne of Clovis, sons; Kerry Clay Yeakey (Rena) of Ft. Worth, TX, Kenny Ray Yeakey (Anne Marie) of Palestine, TX, Howard Horne (Jeanette) of Farwell, TX, and Craig Horne (Marsha) of Granbury, TX, and daughters; Carol Gaye Howard (Daniel) of Ft. Worth, TX, and Laura Hill (Scott) of Texico, NM. Also surviving are grandchildren; Crista Blackhurst (Todd), Joel B. Horne (Miranda), Jonathan Carter Yeakey, Michael Kenneth Yeakey, David Clay Yeakey, Anna Kathryn Yeakey, Aaron Daniel Howard (Corrie), Levi William Howard (Kyndal), Shane Hill (Rachel), Aubrey Hill (Kyle), Joshua Yeakey, and Grayson Horne, and great-grandchildren; Katelyn Blackhurst, Ashlyn Blackhurst, Andrew Blackhurst, Liam Daniel Howard, Hazel Davis Howard, Otto Lee Howard, Brooklynne Waldron, Kinslee Waldron, and Maci Waldron. Visitation will be held at Muffley Funeral Home, Thursday evening, January 19, 2017, 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 20, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at Central Baptist, with Rev. Joel Horne officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. The family will be at 529 Anthony Drive, Clovis, NM (545) 769-9095.
