Claude William Irwin
Claude William Irwin Ojai, CA Claude William Irwin, of Ojai, California, passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2017, following a long battle with cancer. Claude was born at home on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1935, in Jackson, Michigan. His family moved to Southern California in the early 1940's. In 1953, he joined the United States Navy and went on to serve two tours of duty. He helped evacuate Taiwanese civilians during the Korean War and was awarded the United Nations, Korean Service, and National Defense Service Medals. Claude returned to Ojai in 1959, where he met and married Linda Quackenbush, his wife of 57 years. He worked in construction before joining the staff at the Ojai Unified School District in 1969. He was the Plant Supervisor at Nordhoff High School until he retired in 1995. Claude and Linda enjoyed their retirement travelling and camping in the Sierras and at our local beaches. They especially enjoyed spending their 50th anniversary on a cruise from Hawaii to Tahiti, enjoying magnificent sunrises and sunsets from their balcony stateroom. Claude is survived by his wife Linda; his children Douglas and Tina Irwin, both of Ojai; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by brother Richard Irwin of Ventura; brother Donald Irwin (Doris) of Yucca Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Irwin of Camarillo in 2013; his parents; two brothers; and a sister. A celebration of Claude's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, on the corner of Bristol Road and Ojai Avenue in Ojai.
