Dr. Clarence Edward Taylor Jr. COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Dr. C. Edward Taylor, 73, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with Dr. James C. Adams officiating the service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the funeral home. Dr. Taylor died Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Clarence Edward Taylor and Elaine Adams Taylor. After graduating from Wofford College in 1965, he earned his master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of South Carolina in 1970, and later earned his Ph.D. in counseling from the University of South Carolina in 1972. Dr. Taylor was known for his devotion to the community, promoting respect and service to all citizens affected by mental illnesses. For more than 35 years, he worked at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health as director of Staff Development and Training. He also served on various committees, including the Institutional Review Board and State Quality Forum. He was instrumental in spearheading the S.C. Department of Mental Health Governor's Quality Award for the year the SCDMH received the prestigious Silver Award. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed reading, working in his yard, and playing pool. Surviving are his wife, Kathy Ann Geraty; daughter, Tracy Smith (Frank) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; son, Adam Taylor of Columbia; granddaughter, Taylor Smith; a long-term family friend who is considered a son, David Jones of Columbia; a sister, Elaine Taylor Brantley (Joe); and various nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to Docia Johnson for her wonderful care during Dr. Taylor's illness.
