August 20, 1937 - April 1, 2017 Christopher Otto Brandes Sr. peacefully went to heaven on April 1, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born August 20, 1937 to Chris and Clara Brandes in San Antonio, Texas where he chose to call home. As a young child he loved playing yo-yo, Jax, and was often in trouble for bending his grandma's sewing needles into fishing hooks and fishing at the river close by. As he got older he loved taking the bus to get a haircut, a soda pop, and watch the picture show all for under 20¢. He also grew to love cars; as his father was in the auto auction business. He became one of the early drag racers with his '55 Chevy that would fiercely lift the front wheels, winning most every race. He honorably served as a sailor in the Navy and proudly worked 40 years for the Texas highway Department as a master electrician. On September 6, 1958 he married his beloved wife Dottie. They were formally introduced by Chris's best friend Wayne Rolin; husband of Dottie's sister Barbara. Chris was tough, hard-working, a family man, and always a great friend to many. In his earlier years he enjoyed spending his weekends with his wife and kids and family vacations around the US. Traditions ran deep with Chris many of which his kids, Chris and Sandy carry on today. He had a passion for NASCAR, enjoyed hunting, and was an avid bass fisherman. He cherished and maintained the family Lake House, where he caught a record breaking 86 pound catfish, and farm property "The Land". The Land, only a mere 17 acres, is where Chris took many trophy bucks. In his later years Chris and Dottie spent most mornings at the gym, they loved traveling, gambling, cards, family get together's, fishing at the lake house, and his cows at the land. Above all his favorite was being old Papa to his grand/great grandkids. He is survived by his beloved wife Dottie of 59 years, his children Chris Brandes and wife Gina, Sandy Korzekwa and husband Ronald, his grandchildren Casey Garcia and husband Tanner, Shanna Brandes and Cole Tillinghast, and Taylor Brandes, great grandchildren Abby, Colton, Paisley, Preslie, Ellie and Cody and many other beloved family and friends. We already miss him dearly. A Celebration of Chris's life will be held at the Garden Ridge Community Center on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
