Charles A. Ray Carrollton On October 12, 2016, Charles A. Ray went home to be with his Lord. He was born February 20, 1922, in Ft. Worth, Texas. After high school and a brief stint working in several Texas towns, Dr. Ray moved to Mississippi where he attended Mississippi College until World War II interrupted his studies. During the War he served his country in the Army Air Corps as a pilot and flight instructor. After the War Dr. Ray finished his college degree and moved to New Orleans, LA where he married Mary Elizabeth Gilbert. Dr. Ray earned the Bachelor of Divinity and the Doctor of Theology degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of several churches in Mississippi—Bala Chitto, Bluff Springs and Price Street in Pike County, Moorhead Baptist Church, North Greenwood Baptist Church—as well as churches in Thailand and Japan with the International Mission Board. During that time, Dr. Ray also earned the Master of Arts degree in English from Mississippi College and did graduate work in anthropology at the University of Texas in Arlington. After retirement, he and his wife taught English in China and ministered briefly in Zimbabwe. Dr. Ray was preceded in death by his father, Robert Latham Ray; his mother, Louie Mae Ray; and an older brother, Robert Latham Ray, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Elizabeth Ray; three children, Charlie Ray, Jr. (Sheryl), Elizabeth Ray, and Gil Ray (Marilyn) ; and his sister, Mary Louise Hiett. He is also survived by six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, A memorial service celebrating Dr. Ray's life will be held at Carrollton Baptist Church, Carrollton, MS, on Friday, October 21st. Visitation is from 10:00-11:00 AM, and the service will begin at 11:00. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Carrollton Baptist Church building fund or the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
