Charles H. Hougen
Hougen, Charles H. Charles H. Hougen, age 92, formerly of 4612 Highway B, Manitowoc, entered into eternal life Thursday evening, October 13, 2016 at Laurel Grove Assisted Living of Manitowoc where he resided for the past two years. Charles was born on December 19, 1923, in Valders, son of the late Henry C. and Alma (Kasten) Hougen. He attended the Rockwood School through the tenth grade and left school to help on the family farm. On April 22, 1944 he married the former Ruth Schurr at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on November 24, 1967. Charles farmed in the town of Kossuth and worked at Smalley Manufacturing from 1962 until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church and served on the church school board, past member of the Rockwood Volunteer Fire Department board of directors for twenty years. Charles especially enjoyed tending to his large garden and sharing his vegetables with friends and relatives. Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law: Marilyn (Richard) Wenzel, Manitowoc; Lois (Paul) Franzen, Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law: Mark (Jeanne) Hougen, Manitowoc; six grandchildren: Neil Franzen and his wife: Sarah Rohe, Urbandale, IA; Ryan (Jennifer) Franzen, Manitowoc; Amy (Justin) Free, Gilbert, AZ; Katie (Brent) MacDonald, Manitowoc; Julie Hougen and her special friend: Blaine Schwalbe, Manitowoc; Lisa (Jacob) Steppe, Manitowoc; one step-grandchild: Monica (Wenzel) Norlin and her husband: James, Fulshear, TX; ten great-grandchildren: Aidan, William and Elliott Franzen; Jackson, Madelyn and Audrey MacDonald; Lily Steppe; Leah Franzen; Brady and Brinley Free; one expected great-grandchild in January 2017; three step-great-grandchildren: Audrey, Matthew and Daniel Norlin; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Nies, Henderson, NV; Elaine Schurr, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Alma Hougen; his wife: Ruth Hougen; one brother: Kenward Hougen; one sister and two brothers-in-law: Arlene (Herbert) Ahlswede; Henry Schurr; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Mae (Alton) Hougen; Irma (Kermit) Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2016 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 Pine Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Daniel R. Sims will officiate with burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
