In memory of
Charles Melvin Heist (Teeny) was born June 3, 1920 to Charles A. Heist and Ester A. (Impink) Heist In West Reading, PA. After graduating from West Reading H.S. and working for the Berkshire Knitting Mills, he entered the Air Force at age 21. Assigned to the 492nd Bomb Group, he flew 17 missions with the Gaine's Crew and 13 with the Orthman Crew as a bombardier. One of his missions was flown across the English Channel on D-Day. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with three oak clusters. He married Leta Jo Mitchell on January 27, 1945, while stationed at Biggs Air Force Base, El Paso, TX. Following his discharge, they returned to Pennsylvania where he worked again at the knitting mills. Returning to El Paso five years later, he worked for the railroad, Brown & Olds, and Chevron Refinery as a maintenance foreman. He retired from Chevron after 31 years. He spent the next 34 years enjoying his family. He passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017. Charlie was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Woodrow, Paul, Jack, Ted, and sister June Young. He is survived by wife of 72 years, Leta, his brother Ray, his sons Karl (Robert), Fred (Lupe), Chuck (Beatrice), and daughter Glenda Feris (Greg). Grandchildren: Charles, Lindsey (Jim), Kara (Will),Victoria, Alexia, Andrea, Alyssa, Chris (Lacey), Chad (Cindy), and great grandchildren: Colby, Kaley, Charlie, Carlee, Madison and Hunter. Our deepest gratitude to CIMA Hospice for the loving care and comfort given to our father and mother. Visitation for Mr. Heist will be held Wednesday, April 19 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home-East with Funeral Service at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors. Services entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home-East (915)598-3332.
