Sister Catherine Michael was received into the congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug. 15, 1946, and professed her final religious vows on Aug. 16, 1953. Sister Catherine Michael devoted herself to the life and mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for more than 70 years. Sister attended grade school at Whitefield and Center, both in Wilmington, from 1925 to 1932. She went on to Wilmington Junior High, and in 1934 she entered Wilmington High School, graduating in 1938. Throughout her life with the order, Sister ministered primarily in education. She delighted in teaching the younger grades, often leading remedial reading clinics during both regular and summer school hours. She also provided religious education classes, along with the standard curriculum, while stationed at various congregational schools in New York, North Carolina, New Jersey and Florida. After Sister Catherine Michael relocated to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany in 1972, she volunteered as an aid in the infirmary, where she enjoyed working with her older sisters. She also assisted with various household tasks as needed, and for a time she filled in with clerical assistance to the St. Elizabeth Mission Society. Sister Catherine Michael is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary. There will be no wake service.
