Carolyn S. Denson
Jan. 16, 1951 - Oct. 15, 2016 She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and educator, born the second child of the late Agnew and Isabell Hall Singleton. A native of Mobile, Alabama, she committed her life to Christ and was baptized at Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church in Plateau, Alabama. She later became a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Brighton and First Baptist Church, Fairfield. In service unto her Lord and Savior, she was active in the Choir and Sunday School Ministries. A 1968 graduate of Mobile County Training High School, she matriculated at Stillman College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Language. Later, she earned a Master of Art in Education-M.A. Ed from the University of Alabama Birmingham. Carolyn was a profound linguist, fluently speaking and writing in French and Spanish. She was blessed to travel the world extensively to experience various cultures and arts. She taught foreign language and English in the Bessemer City Schools for 16 years. In Birmingham City Schools, she served as Vice Principal, Principal and Foreign Language Advisor for 15 years. The honor of Metro Birmingham NAACP Golden Educator Award was bestowed upon her in 2013. Affectionately known as "Cal" and "Mrs. D", she enjoyed 45 years of an endearing marriage to Mr. Alfonso Denson. Carolyn lived life in great splendor and set the bar of achievement, devotion, integrity and excellence in everything that she did. Her spirit has left indelible footprints in the hearts of her family; husband, Alfonso Denson; sons, Alfonso L. (Gloria) and Kevin A. (Jessica) Denson; sisters, Linda Mills, Marilyn (McArthur) Sanders, Carletta Singleton and Andria Singleton; brothers, Kyle (Vanessa) and Alan (Toni) Singleton, Sr.; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Karsten and Jordyn and numerous other dear relatives. We will always miss you. Hour of Remembrance is Noon Saturday, October 22, 2016, at First Baptist Church, 324 59th Street, Fairfield 35064. Pastor R.G. Twyman, Officiant. Entombment follows at Elmwood Mausoleum. Family Visitation is 5:00 until 7:00 Friday, October 21, 2016. Calling Hours at Johnson Memorial, Bessemer, Friday Noon until 9:00 P.M.
