Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016, at an 11:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau for Carmen Teonil de Moya, 70, who died on Sunday, October 16, 2016. She passed away peacefully in her sleep while vacationing with family in Clearville, Pennsylvania. Interment will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery. The Very Reverend Monsignor Russell J. Harrington, VE, Chancellor of the Diocese of Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Sister Gloria Cain, SSND and Kathy Helms. Gift bearers will be Renee Torina, Vickie Carney, and Jennifer Link. Eulogist will be Laura Cain Miller, and the Academy of the Sacred Heart Choir will sing for the services. Survivors include two daughters, Christina Cain Popp and her husband, Christopher of Lafayette and Laura Cain Miller and her husband, Scott of Lafayette; one son, Martin Shannon Cain and his wife, Kendra of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Lillian Cain, Bradford Cain, Brewer Cain, Madeline Miller, Sophia Miller and Ivan Popp; one niece, Kathleen McCray of New Orleans; and many cousins from the Dominican Republic. She was preceded in death by her mother, Teonil Pou; her father, Martin Antonio de Moya; one sister, Sonya de Moya; and one brother, Ivan de Moya. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to Houston, Texas as a young girl. She attended Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart. Her senior year she transferred to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Class of 1964. Carmen graduated from U.S.L. with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Arts in Administration and Supervision. She began her teaching career in 1969 at the Academy where she taught Health and Physical Education and English. She started the volleyball and softball programs at Sacred Heart and in 1977, led her volleyball team to the school's first and only state championship. After devoting 30 years to teaching and coaching at the Academy, she retired in 1999. She remained active as the Alumnae Director, serving at one time as the Alumnae Board President. More recently, Carmen worked as a Spanish translator for the Federal and District courts in Lafayette Parish. Carmen will be remembered as a wonderful mother, friend, coach and mentor. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her best friends. She loved fly fishing, boating, the beach and anything outdoors. Friends and family will remember her enthusiasm for Star Trek, fun times, and a cold glass of wine. Carmen's love, loyalty and appreciation for the Academy was evident in the way she lived in her everyday life. Her legacy at Sacred Heart will continue to live on through her children and grandchildren. The Pallbearers will be Fred Zaunbrecher, Tim Zaunbrecher, Michael Smith, Billy Carney, Dean Doherty, Brandon Link, Jake Chapman, and Bryan Leger. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday from 8:00 AM until time of service. A Rosary will be prayed Thursday at 6:00 PM with the eulogy to follow at Martin & Castille Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Academy of the Sacred Heart, P.O.
