Carlos David "Carlitos" Sousa Carlos David "Carlitos" Sosa, age 45, died peacefully at his home in Washington, D.C., on February 10, 2017, after battling cancer for nearly 2 years. His funeral service and cremation took place in Washington in February. Carlos was born to Carlos Osvaldo and Carol Sue (York) Sosa on September 6, 1971, in Lafayette, IN, where his parents still reside. Carlos attended Murdock Elementary School, Sunnyside Junior High, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1989. He spent his junior year abroad in Amuhle, Germany. After graduation from High School he moved to Germany where he studied and worked until 1993. He then moved to Spain, where he taught for one year before moving to Ireland in 1994 with his partner, and later spouse, Neil O'Flaherty. In Ireland, Carlos taught at Waterford Institute of Technology for a number of years before going on to establish the Institute's English Language Center which delivered language programs to overseas students. During this period he studied for a Master's degree at National University of Ireland, Maynooth and graduated with First Class Honors. In 2004, Carlos was recruited by the World Learning, School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT, where he began his career in International Development. He later moved to Washington DC, where at the time of his passing he was Divisional Vice President for Education at World Learning Inc. He is survived by his spouse, Neil O'Flaherty, his parents, and his younger sister, Cristina Marie Sosa of Brooklyn, NY. Gifts in memory of Carlos are being made to The Experiment in International Living at www.worldlearning.org/donatenow The funds raised will support a young student from Indiana to participate in this summer's experiment program.
