Carl Grasso Talented billiards player, family was everything to him Carl Grasso, 88, passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Grasso married the former Mary Ruggiero in 1949. The couple settled in Arrochar in 1964. He graduated Westinghouse High School and went on to study advanced electrical technologies at Brooklyn Technical Evening School. After receiving his master's electrician license, he began his career with the Transit Authority and Public Works and retired from the NYC Board of Education in 1989 as an electrical foreman in charge of Staten Island and South Brooklyn schools. Mr. Grasso grew up in Brooklyn, where he worked in his father's billiard hall on Union Street. He met many famous pool players who played the exhibition circuit and became a talented player himself. He loved teaching family and friends the intricacies of playing billiards. In his younger days, Mr. Grasso enjoyed hunting and became an excellent marksman proficient in trap and skeet shooting, winning many awards for his skills. Mr. Grasso was also a talented artist, drawing beautiful wildlife scenes and a thoughtful writer of short stories. Together with his wife, Mr. Grasso enjoyed traveling to western destinations, including the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains. "Family was everything to him," said his family. "He always worried and cared for everyone." Mr. Grasso was the beloved husband of Mary (nee Ruggiero); loving father of Carl III, Frank, Michael, and Peter; cherished grandfather of 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. Azzara Funeral Home, 183 Sand Lane, S.I., N.Y. 10305. Visiting will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass is at Holy Rosary Church on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Interment is at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in loving memory of Carl Grasso to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ( www.stjude.org ) would be greatly appreciated.
