Byron William Conrad January 10, 1927 - April 10, 2017 El Cajon - Byron was born in the family home in Lakeside, CA in 1927 and passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 10. He attended Grossmont High School then joined the Navy after his 17th birthday. He earned the rating of radioman, aviation radioman, and was in the final weeks of earning the designation of Link Instrument Instructor when he received a fleet appointment to the first Holloway plan commission in the regular Navy. He received his commission and degree in Public Administration from USC in 1950 and immediately joined the USS Boxer en route to Korea. He was subsequently chosen to serve with the Naval Communications Facility in Tokyo to serve as liaison with the US military personnel in Korea. He later served as operations officer of the USS Whetstone. Byron was a sweet and caring man who loved to regale friends and family with stories of his time in the military and other life adventures including travels with his wife and family. Byron left active duty in 1955 and joined the submarine reserve. He also worked many years for San Diego County as a real estate appraiser subsequently rising to the position of Chief of Appraisers in the Real Estate Section. He became a member of the International Right Away Association, earning the designation of senior member and president of its San Diego chapter. Byron and his wife of 68 years Jean, built their home in El Cajon and renovated vacation homes in Julian and Eagle Lake with the help of friends and family. Byron was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Ann and is survived by his wife Jean, children Dee Anne, Jim, Linnea, and Karri, his sister Gerry, and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
