Burton Kirkland Bennett, Sr January 11, 1928 - April 16, 2017 Columbia On Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the age of 89, Burton Kirkland Bennett, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior after a brave battle against Parkinson's Disease. Burt is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Derrell and Evelyn Kirkland Bennett; two brothers, Fred Bennett and Albert Bennett, Jr.; and a sister, Rea Hedgecock. Burt is survived by his sister, Rebecca Bennett of Princeton, TX; daughter, Kelly Bennett and husband, Elonzo of Greensboro, NC; son, Burton Bennett, Jr., and wife, Lesley, and grandchildren, Connor and Burton Bennett, III, all of Raleigh, NC; longtime companion Angie Sparrell; and many other extended family and friends. Burt served in the Army as a radio operator and parachutist with the 11th Airborne Division in occupied Japan, then graduated from the University of South Carolina, and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi.Burt enjoyed a long and wonderful life, especially in the early days of Shagging at North Myrtle Beach, SC. He was inducted in the Shag Hall of Fame in 1995, and his picture and words about shagging can be found among other members at the OD Resort in NMB. Burt was a private pilot for many years and also immensely enjoyed golf, birdwatching, traveling, and bridge, competing in many bridge tournaments around the Southeast. Most of all, Burt truly loved his big boisterous family, and friends too numerous to name, but you all know who you are. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2017, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1900 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Audubon Society.
