Bruce W. Julien
Bruce W. Julien, of Scituate, was born July 17, 1947. He went to heaven on March 31, 2017. Bruce was husband and best friend to his wife, Patricia McGrath Julien. He was an amazing and loving father to Jennifer McGrath Silverman (Harold), James McGrath and Joseph McGrath, a proud grandfather to Bridget and Cooper Silverman, and a loving son to Bill and Mary Julien, as well as many cousins and his aunt Jania. But most of all, he was a friend to almost everyone he met. With a big smile, a booming Hello, everyone! and always a neon or tropical colored shirt, this gentle giant lit up a room. He always had a corny joke or story to tell, and a raucous laugh that just made you smile. Bruce loved life, especially his life in Key West with his wife, Pat and pups, Daisy and Minnie, and his many close friends here at his home at Key West by the Sea. He used to tell anyone who would listen how much he loved his job as a storyteller at the Harry S. Truman Little White House, and all the friends he had there. Bruce was the ultimate ham, and loved entertaining his groups with stories and even sometimes song. Speaking of song, occasionally he was known to get up and belt out Mack the Knife at Two Friends, of course with gorgeous backup by the three Onderdonk sisters: he beamed at the fact that every guy in the place was jealous and must have wondered how this old guy landed these blond beauties as his chorus, Bruces Pips. Bruce and Pat recently took their grandchildren on a Disney Cruise. I think it was the happiest week of his life, if the grin on his face every day was any sign. He loved being with Bridget and Cooper, especially in front of the unlimited ice cream bar! Did I tell you about the great time we had on the Disney Cruise? As a couple, Bruce and Pat were best friends and loved being together whether listening to Sound Check at The Green Parrot, Fishing on the Captain John Greyhound, grocery shopping, watching sunset at Ft. Zachary Park, having bagels and con leche as the Disney ship pulled in, watching reruns of Law and Order over and over, having cocktail parties and Christmas dinners for friends and traveling. Since Bruce retired from teaching math at Avon High School, the couple traveled to France, Spain, England, Hawaii, Mediterranean cruise, Queen Mary transatlantic cruise, but Bruces heart was in Paris. He wore a French beret the whole time there. Bruce loved their children. One would never know that he was not their biological parent because he always had the utmost love for and pride in them. He beamed when Jenn got her Boston College diploma, he cried when she was married and Jenn danced the fathers dance with him, and shed tears of joy with Pat when they learned they were going to be grandparents twice over. When Bruce and Pat went to Houston to see James graduate from Air Force boot camp, they were the proudest parents there. Bruce loved hearing of James wonderful and unusual finds in his antique business. He thoroughly enjoyed some of the Truman memorabilia James would send him. He would proudly tell people, I have a son that looks just like George Clooney, and out popped a picture. Joe was very close to Bruce since he was a young boy when Bruce and Pat were dating. Bruce was a true Dad and role model to Joe. There were tears when they brought Joe to Eckerd College, and at the end of the day had to drive away. And fear shortly after 9/11 with their son so far away. When Joe opened his own restaurant, Bruce couldnt have been more excited, and when they went to see it, he expressed enormous pride at what Joe had accomplished in Average Joes Bar and Grill. Everyone in the pool heard for days what great food and really cold beer Joe served. Bruce brought happiness everywhere he went. He will be remembered fondly for his kind, gentle, caring, loving ways, his loud laugh and his incredible love for life. Sleep well, love of my life and my best friend. Until we meet again, you will be my shining star. Pat will have a Celebration of Life for Bruce in Key West on April 20, 2017 at Key West by the Sea Rec Room for his Key West friends and family at 6pm. Pat will have a celebration of life in Massachusetts on July 23, from 1 - 3 p.m. at Campanales Restaurant, 88 Pearl St, Braintree. Bruce loved his dogs, and dogs in general, so anything you would like to donate to a local animal shelter in his name will make him smile!
