Bonita Ann Hicks, 84, passed away on October 12, 2016, after a lengthy illness in Longview, Texas. She was born in Flag Springs (Windom), Texas, to Helen and Lendell Ford. She attended Windom Schools and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. She married her high school sweetheart, Glynn K. Hicks, on April 16, 1950, and they lived in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was stationed in the Navy during the Korean War. They then moved to Dallas, Texas, where she worked for many years as an office manager for a doctor. She began working at the Internal Revenue Service as a secretary and worked her way up to an office auditor (one of the nice ones), Internal Revenue Agent, and Appellate Conferee. She retired in 1999 as a union representative for IRS employees. She was also a cancer survivor of 20 years. She worked and took care of her husband who had a massive stroke at age 51. After he passed away and she retired, she moved to Longview to be near their only child, LaDona, and her family. She was active with the Red Hatters, Doll Club, and was a member of the Winterfield United Methodist Church of Longview. She was known as "Santa Lady" and loved Christmas. She decorated every room in her home each year, and welcomed many friends and strangers to view her Santa collection and festive decorations. She loved to quilt, paint, and make beautiful porcelain dolls. She also loved to travel. She had two little dogs that were her joy, Colby and Casey. They were fortunate that close family friend, Beverly Jernigan, adopted them and, before her passing, Bonita knew they went to a loving home. She is survived by her daughter, LaDona, and son-in-law, Terry Dunn, of Longview; granddaughter, Amber Dunn, of Jonesboro, Arkansas; brother, Don Ford, of Farmers Branch; and sister, Gail McAllister, and husband, Milton, of Denison. She was also especially close to her niece, Missy McAllister Kerr, of Mansfield. She was loved by nieces and nephews from all of her families, and had many special friends whom she considered her "adopted" family. She was truly loved by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glynn; parents, Helen and Lendell Ford; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Vanessa Ford; niece, Kellye Ford; and foster brother, Arthur Reeves. Family night will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham and a memorial service will be held there on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Denison Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), P. O. Box 1330, Denison, Texas, 75021.
