ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Billy Ray Herring, 80, of Rockingham, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at his home. He was born Jan. 27, 1936 in Wayne County, son of the late Mark and Lillie Barwick Herring. Mr. Herring was retired with the N.C. Department of Revenue with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockingham. Mr. Herring was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Herring was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather who adored his wife of 57 years. Mr. Herring enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was at every game he was physically able to attend, always making a valiant effort no matter how difficult it was for him to get there. He was also a passionate UNC Tar Heel fan and enjoyed the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Herring is survived by his wife, Faye Sutton Herring of the home; a daughter, Camille H. Utter and husband Chuck of Laurinburg; grandchildren, Ben Utter, Caiti Utter and Cameron Utter; two brothers, Donald Herring and wife Margaret of Wilson and Mark Herring Jr. and wife Peggy of Seven Springs; and many loved nieces, nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the mausoleum of Richmond Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Sykes and the Rev. Pat Sykes officiating. The family will see friends following the service.
