Bill Cohen, 92, formerly of Newington, where he lived with his wife Avis for more than 50 years, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, January 12. Bill was born in New York City where he made many close friendships which lasted to this day. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid tennis player, a familiar figure at the courts in town. Bill developed a passion for acting, appearing in many productions including Theatre Newington, New Britain Repertory, Windsor Jesters, and Manchester Little Theatre. His favorite role was the part of Scrooge in Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Bill was an active community volunteer in such organizations as KRIS Radio for the Blind, Literacy Volunteers and Meals on Wheels. Bill enjoyed fishing, old movies, flying his homemade kites, and making people laugh. He was a proud veteran of World War II where he served in the Army Air Corps. His greatest joy was the love of his grandchildren. He leaves his children, Alison Cohen and husband Ken Kaplan of Boston, Jason Cohen of Montvale, Virginia, and Paul and his wife Sandra Cohen of Berlin. He was the proud grandfather ("Poppy Bill") to Abbie, Lydia, Michelle, Asher, and Peter. He is also survived by his loving sister Sally Hagel of New York City. Friends and relatives are invited to gather with the family on Sunday, January 15 at 11 a.m. at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., with a service to begin at 12:00 p.m. Burial with military honors to follow at Congregation B'nai Shalom Cemetery, Wethersfield.
