In memory of
Beverly Barnes April 22nd, 1938-January 22nd, 2017 Resident of Santa Cruz Beverly Barnes died with dignity and grace on January 22nd, 2017. She will be remembered for her outstanding intelligence, humor, and genuine love of humanity. Beverly was born in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she studied Sociology and Philosophy. She was the only woman in her class to graduate with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She met and married Charles Barnes after a brief six week courtship. They were together for 58 years and had three children, Bradley, Kendall and Alyssa. They all survive her. Beverly moved to the east coast with her family and lived much of her life in West Shokan, New York, a rural town in the Catskill mountains. Her love for that land was deep, and her ashes will be scattered there on her birthday, April 22nd, celebrated nationally as Earth Day. Beverly and Charles founded a successful home business as leather crafters, where she was the artistic and creative powerhouse. They made their living as a team, selling at arts and craft fairs around the east coast. Beverly loved people and enjoyed talking with anyone that she met. An early riser, her morning walks were filled with the people and wildlife with which she loved to interact. A spirit of adventure was a big part of Beverly's life, and she became an avid RV owner after her retirement and move to Santa Cruz in 1999. Often traveling solo, she amazed us all by journeying to places as far as Alaska and as exotic as Burning Man. Beverly's creativity expressed itself in many ways. From her exquisite and prolific broken tile mosaic art pieces, to her love of trying new recipes and her solar toy collection. Beverly was a devoted member of Women in Black and could be found on Friday's advocating peace and kindness between all people. She will be remembered by many for her friendly, positive nature, and we were blessed to have had her in our lives. View the online memorial for Beverly Barnes
