November 22, 1936 - October 18, 2016 Bettye Jean Whitson Kimbrell, 79, from Mount Olive, AL, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. She is preceded in death by: her husband Calvin Kimbrell, sister Doris Whitson Shinn, brother Karrold Whitson, and son-in-law Jerry Denton. She is survived by her children: Danny (Denise) Kimbrell, Kathy (Dennis) McConnell, Nina (Mark) Harvey, Cindy Kimbrell Denton, Scott (Leslie) Kimbrell, daughter-in-law Sharon Hollis Kimbrell, brother Milford (Rose) Whitson, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and many friends. Bettye was a prolific and acclaimed quilter, having been named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment of the Arts in 2008, having been awarded the Alabama Folk Heritage Award by the Alabama State Council on the Arts in 1995, and having her biography Out of Whole Cloth: The Life of Bettye Kimbrell by Joyce H. Cauthen published in 2013. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Mount Olive (3200 Mount Olive Road, Mount Olive, AL 35117). On Friday, October 21, 2016, she will lie in state from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM the Funeral will be at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive followed by interment at Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale, AL.
