In memory of
Betty Thornton
Thornton, Betty June Raburn Betty June Raburn Thornton, 92, died October 8, 2016 at The Woodmark at Uptown Assisted Living Facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born June 12, 1924 in Clifton, Arizona to Joseph H. Raburn and Sarah A. Robertson, but spent her growing years in Albuquerque and always thought of herself as a New Mexican. Betty was a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University where she met her future husband her first day on campus. She and Dr. Edward E. Thornton were married for 60 years. He preceded her in death September 17, 2008. Through the years many friends, students and colleagues experienced a graceful welcome, good food elegantly prepared and served, and wonderful conversation in Betty's home. She was a partner with Edward in his service as minister, professor, educator, and spiritual director, first at the Institute of Religion in Houston, Texas, then at Crozier Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania and Rochester, New York, then finally at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky where they retired. Betty is also preceded in death by her brother, Joe Hugh Raburn, and sister, Virginia Burns Simms. She is survived by her daughter Katherine Williams and son-in-law, Brent Williams. Betty penned a note praising and blessing Katherine for all of her love, the times spent together - doing errands, shopping, enjoying lunches â€" and the good-night calls each evening. "She has been a priceless gift to me, and I hope my love lingers behind me." Betty's ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden at the St. Matthews Methodist Church in Louisville, Kentucky alongside those of her beloved husband.
