Betty Rutherford September 24, 1926 - October 14, 2016 Salem, Oregon - Betty Idell Rutherford (90) was born in Eugene, Oregon to Ellis Curtis Bristol and Emma Reyn Bristol. She attended Salem Schools and graduated from Salem High School in 1944. She joined Ma-Bell Telephone Company in 1944 and with the help of Ma-Bell, she was able to obtain her Associate Degree in business and "motor mouthing", a pre-requisite with Ma-Bell as a phone operator/supervisor. She was a devoted employee for 39 years and retired in 1982. In 1948, she married Walter Mark Rutherford, who was with Boise Cascade for many years and they were married for 48 years. In her retirement she volunteered with the local schools and Senior Care Centers. She also attended senior activities, was very active with the Lutheran Church, and has donated over 100 comfort afghans to those in need. Betty loved her family, friends, church, celebrations, house boating, travel and her devoted companion, "Rudy", her dog. She has stepped on the ground of 49 of the United States and 13 countries of the world. In 1967, when Mark was 12, she spent one whole summer traveling across the United States with him by bus. Her son, Steve passed away in January of 2015. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Diane and grandchildren, John & Tiffany from Coos Bay, Oregon; son Mark and daughter-in-law, Gay, and grandchildren Chad & Brooke from Westlake Village, CA.; and foster son, Gene and his wife, Madeline from Camas WA…and of course, "Rudy". A celebration of life will be held Saturday, November 5th at 10 o'clock in the morning at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
