BETTY FISHER JERSEYVILLE — Betty Violet Fisher, 91, died at 5:23 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Betty was born in Sturdivant, Missouri, the oldest and last surviving child born to Charles and Dova (Hanner) Bess. She was raised in Sturdivant until moving with her family to the Alton area as a teenager. In her younger years, she had been employed in the cafeteria at Alton Memorial Hospital, as well as at Alton Box Board, where she worked during World War II making bomb rings. She married Michael L. Fisher Jr, or as she called him "Jun" on Sept. 3, 1947, in Piggott, Arkansas, and together they worked and raised their two sons on the family farm near Jerseyville. She and Mike shared nearly 48 years together before his death on July 28, 1995, after which time Betty moved into Jerseyville. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Dean and Debbie Fisher of Jerseyville; her very special grandchildren and their spouses, Crystal and David Brand of Jerseyville, Melody and Jay Schenk of Golden Eagle, Joshua and Vallerie Fisher of Granite City, and Allen and Amy White of Jerseyville; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Gary Fisher; two sisters, Evalee Lewis and Freida Wilson; and two brothers, Donald "Sting" Bess and John Bess. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct.21 at the Morgan Memorial Park in Advance, Missouri. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
