BESS KYPROS, Ed.D. OBITUARY . Basiliki (Bess) was born in Ploumari on the island of Lesvos in Greece to Zanos and Areti Gougoutas in 1937. In 1938 she immigrated to Mansfield, Ohio, where her parents. Her father was called to serve as a priest at the Greek Orthodox Church. She grew up there and graduated from Mansfield Senior High School, receiving a PTA scholarship to study education.. Bess completed her major in elementary education from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1959. Shortly after she married George P. Kypros, M.D. and began raising a family of three sons, George Jr., Paul, and Christopher. During these years she taught preschool and was very active in school and church activities. When George Jr. and Paul ventured off to college and Christopher to Shepherd's School and Home for the Mentally Impaired, Bess returned to Wayne State and completed a Master's in Preschool and Parent Education and at age 50 earned a Doctorate in Higher and Adult Education. In 1989 she joined the faculty at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. She directed and taught in the Child Development/Early Childhood program for twenty-two years. Bess was active on the local, state and national level conducting research, presenting, and publishing her work in early childhood education. She also served on many boards representing children and families. After retirement she remained active in her church, Cornerstone Baptist Church, teaching biblical topics, coordinating a volunteer tutoring program for children from Detroit, and facilitating Hope For You, a support group for those facing challenging illnesses. Her desire to become a certified Biblical Counselor was thwarted by her reoccurring cancer battle. Bess was predeceased by her parents Areti and Zanos Gougoutas and her son Christopher. Her life continues in the lives of George P. Kypros, M.D., George Jr. (Suzanne) and Paul, her brother Jack, sistesr-in-law Linda and Dessie, and five nieces and nephews.
