Berton "Sam" Hartz 1937 ~ 2016 Berton "Sam" Hartz II, 79, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on September 29, 2016 with his family by his side. Sam was born to Clayton and Mary Hartz on June 24, 1937 at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise, Idaho. According to Sam, he was an all-star athlete but a quiet student. According to those that knew him best, at least the all-star athlete part was true. Quiet or not, Sam graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1955 and served two years in the Navy immediately after. Sam was introduced to Leona Pettinger through his parents. Sam and Leona exchanged letters while he finished his time in the Navy. The two wed on August 9, 1958 in Atkinson, Nebraska. A few years after their marriage, Sam and Leona bought their family home on 26th and Irene. This is where they raised their 5 children and any others that decided to pop in. Sam worked many jobs, usually 2 or 3 at a time, to support the family so Leona could stay home with their children. In the 70s, Sam and his family built a cabin in Star Ranch near Placerville, Idaho. Family and friends chipped in to help Foreman Sam and his 5 children/live-in construction workers. The Hartz cabin became a year-round gathering place that harbors many wonderful memories. The cabin also served as the perfect theater for the many stories Sam loved to tell and songs he loved to sing. In the 80s, Sam gathered up friends and family to form one of the best co-ed teams in town for many years to come. The team went on to play in State, Regional and National tournaments and even led to the first article written about Sam Hartz in the local paper (though not the last). In 1999, Sam retired after a long career of hard work and then after 47 wonderful years of marriage, Sam lost Leona to Alzheimer's in 2005. To fill his time and satisfy his need for finding a good deal, Sam became a "professional" yard-saler. He and his brother, Clay, spent many weekends finding hidden "treasures" and meeting new people. With Sam's eye for a bargain and his talent for carpentry, his constant finds were often flipped at yard-sales Sam would have of his own. In the last several years, Sam was a member at the Eagles Club and would go dancing at the club with his brother just about every weekend. While Sam and his brother would go to dances together, they saved their actual dancing skills for "the ladies." Sam lived a life full of laughter, full of friends and family, and full of love. Sam is preceded in death by his wife Leona, son Sam Hartz III, parents Clayton and Mary Hartz. He is survived by his son Tony Hartz (Laura), daughter Joan Hartz (Randy Williams), daughter Roberta Hartz and daughter Tam Hartz. Sister Clara Jo Jones, brother Clay Hartz, grandchildren Ashley (Hartz) Leaton (Tanner), Janae Korfanta, Cody Hartz, Jordan Korfanta, great-grandchildren, Ember and Riggs Leaton. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. If you knew Sam and/or his family, come join us for his Celebration of Life on October 29, 2016 at the Stonehouse from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
