Bertha J. Wittman
Bertha J. Wittman, 100, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 276 Charles St., St. Marys, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 at Elk Haven. She was born Sept. 30, 1916 in St. Marys, daughter of the late George and Mary Kugler Wittman. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1934. In 1941, Bertha graduated from the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. She worked for many years in Pittsburgh at St. Joseph's Hospital and then at Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital. She retired from the Stackpole Corporation in 1981. Bertha was a member of the St. Mary's Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Nurses' Study Club, the Benedictine Oblates and the Historical Society. She is survived by a niece, Sandra Wittman Staudenmaier of Pittsburgh; a nephew, Gary Hartnett of St. Marys; and by a great niece and a great nephew. In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by three sisters, Marian Knopick, Agnes Hartnett and Hilda Wittman; and by four brothers, Bernard, Edward, Raymond and George Wittman. She was the last member of her immediate family. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Bertha J. Wittman to be celebrated in the St. Mary's Church on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Alfred Patterson, OSB, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Community Nurses, Inc., 757 Johnsonburg Rd., Suite 200, St. Marys, Pa. 15857, or to the Elk County Catholic School System, Advancement Office, 600 Maurus St., St. Marys, Pa. 15857.
