Bernard Zwiers, 91, of Holland, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, with his wife of 67 years, Annette, by his bedside. Bernard was born in Holland on December 28, 1925, and was a lifelong member at Pine Creek Christian Reformed Church, serving as Deacon, Chairman of the Deacons, General Fund Treasurer, and as an Elder. Then moving to South Olive Christian Reformed Church in 2007. He then served for ten years at Bibles for Mexico with Annette. Bernard worked on his parents, Henry and Minnie Zwiers, farm for many years. In 1945, he joined the U.S Army serving proudly during WWII in the infantry and in the military police. He worked for H. J. Heinz for 40 years as a mechanic, receiving additional training on the new can closing machines. On June 9, 1950, he met and married his wife, Annette Brouwer. Together, they enjoyed traveling across the country on family vacations, choosing to winter in Florida for ten years. After his retirement from Heinz, he served as janitor at Pine Creek Christian Reformed Church for ten years, while also working the sound system and recording of sermons with Annette. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie Zwiers; his brothers, Lester (Joyce) Zwiers, and Norman Zwiers; and his sister, Josephine (Hank) Van Kampen; brother and sister-in laws, Ray (Marion) Brouwer, Lawrence (Joyce) Brouwer, and Dorothy Brouwer and Elsa Brouwer; and an infant great grandson. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Annette; children, Ruth and Larry Van Nuil of Holland and Ron and Debbie Zwiers of West Olive; grandchildren, Scott and Christy Van Nuil, Chad and Kristl Van Nuil; and step-grandson, Chris and Becky Stark; great grandchildren, Kellie Van Nuil, Travis Van Nuil, Levi Van Nuil, Carly VanNuil, Ben Van Nuil, Justin Stark, Landon Stark, and Karly Stark; sister-in-law, Frankie Zwiers; in-laws, Russ and Wilma Brouwer, and Lester Brouwer; and many extended family and friends. A service to celebrate his life with Military Honors will be on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. at South Olive Christian Reformed Church, 6425 120th Ave., Holland. A luncheon will be held after this service at the church. There will be a graveside remembrance for immediate family. Visitation will be Thursday, April 20th, 2017 at Lakeside Memorial Services, 11939 James Street, from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of West Michigan.
