STANLEY - A devoted wife and mother who loved her family with all her heart best describes Berlena Wilcox Freeman, 86, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 7, 2017. She was born Nov. 30, 1930, to the late Porter and Lillie (Grindstaff) Wilcox. Berlena was a lifelong member of New Faith Baptist Church in Stanley and served in many capacities in the church. She loved to listen to gospel music, especially the Gaithers. Berlena loved to cook Southern soul food for her family and friends, and treated everyone with love and respect. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Left behind to cherish her memories is her husband of 65 years, Everett Freeman, of Stanley; four daughters, Shirley Ratchford and husband, Tom, of Indian Trail, N.C., Deborah Rayfield and husband, Mike, of Kings Mountain, N.C., Donna Markham and husband, Robbie, of Palm City, Fla., Rebecca McLaughlin and husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C.; brother and sister, Jack Wilcox and Juanita Adams; grandson, Jason Rayfield and wife, Anna; great-grandson, Wesley Rayfield. Berlena was preceded in death by three siblings. A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley, N.C. The Rev.
