Barbara Lorraine App Sweitzer, 89, died peacefully at home on Oct. 2, 2016 in Amherst, Mass. She was born in Coudersport, Pa., on Oct. 26, 1926, daughter of Marjorie and Seibert App and sister of Seibert Jr. (Bud). The family lived in Port Allegany where Barb graduated from high school in 1944. In 1950, she married Stanley Kahle and the two had three children: eldest, Paul Stanley, and twins, Mark Allen and Molly Ann. Barbara was widowed in 1955. A year later, she met Richard (Dick) Sweitzer and they were married on Dec. 29, 1956. They moved to Towanda where they raised two more children, Frank James (Jim) and Richard Merrill. In 1980, Barb and Dick moved to Andover, Mass., where they lived for 28 years. In 2008, Barb and Dick moved to the Arbors of Amherst to be closer to their sons Jim and Rich. Barb was predeceased by her parents; husband, Stanley Kahle; brother, Bud; grandchild, Julien; daughter, Molly; and husband, Dick. She is survived by her four sons; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her love of the outdoors, her wry sense of humor, her devotion to family and her generosity of spirit. A memorial service for Barbara will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 19 at Grace Episcopal Church, 14 Boltwood Ave. in Amherst, Mass.
