HAMPTON - Barbara Jean (Lackey) Day, 76, went to her Heavenly Home on Friday, October 14, 2016. Barbara was born in Cosby, TN on October 13, 1940, and lived in Hampton, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Bobby Day; her parents, Jess and Ennis Lackey; and two grand-babies. She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Day; her sister and best friend, Carolyn Mooney; brothers, Bill, Doug (Ollie), Larry, Gary (Betty); and many nieces, nephews and friends. Barbara was a Christian and a member of Charity Independent Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, and was a graduate of Hampton High School. Barbara worked at The American Tobacco Co. and then at The City of Newport News, where she served as Deputy Commissioner in the Business License Department and retired after thirty years of service. Barbara was a very kind hearted lady, a devoted mother, sister and friend. Anyone that met her was immediately touched by her gentle spirit. She is now in Heaven with her Savior, and Lord, Jesus Christ. Her family would like to thank Dr. Suzette Worbois for taking care of Barbara for many years. Also, thank you to Grace Hospice and all the kind people there who took wonderful care of Barbara during her illness, and thank you to the caring people of Davita Dialysis-Butler Farm for their kindness. The family will receive friends at Peninsula Funeral Home on Monday, October 17, 2016, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The Home-going Celebration will be at Charity Independent Baptist Church, 39 Harpersville Road, Newport News, Va 23601 on Tuesday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Bruce Hoose. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Sympathies may be made in the form flowers or a donation to Charity Independent Baptist Church.
