Augusta "Gussie" Joppich Clayton, our beloved mother and grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 14, 2016. Gussie was born Dec 22, 1918 to Herman and Augusta (Grabow) Joppich. She lived all but two years of her 97 years in East Tawas. She married Charles Clayton in 1935. They were married 52 years. She is survived by her loving children, Robert (Dixie) Clayton, Constance Tomlin (Ohio) and Cathy (Craig) Jantsch (New York); nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She was a friend to many and all who knew her, loved her. Gussie was very active in her local community for many years. She was a member of the Tawas Senior Center and served as vice president for one year and president for one year. She was elected as the queen of the Tawas Senior Center on July 4, 2001. Augusta was a member of the Whittemore-Prescott Senior Adult and Community Education, a member of the Tawas City Bay No. 2588 Ladies Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles where she served three years as inside guard and one year as conductor, a member of Tawas Bay No. 71 Eastern Star where she served one year as flag bearer and one year as sentinel; served as the president for Bay Park Tower North for one year and the fourth floor monitor for two years at Bay Park Tower South. Gussie was very active in Christ Episcopal Church. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles; her sisters, Lydia, Margaret, Esther and Leona; and a brother, Harold. She also was predeceased by her beloved son-in-law, William Tomlin; and great-great grandson, Gavin. A memorial service will be held in mid-July 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas at a time and date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, N.Y. 13208, Arthritis Foundation or the American Lung Association.
