Anthony F. Smyrski
Anthony F. Smyrski Poughkeepsie - Anthony F. Smyrski, 102 years old, long time resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, and more recently of Cary, NC, died peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the home of Ronald and Joyce Smyrski where he had lived during the past two years. Tony was born September 3, 1914 in New Milford, CT, to Gabriel and Mary Biel Smyrski. He grew up on a tobacco and dairy farm in New Milford with three sisters and one brother. Following graduation from Rochester Institute of Technology, Tony married fellow student, Barbara Gough, on June 29, 1940. Tony joined IBM in 1941, holding various positions during his 34 years there including Customer Engineer, Instructor in Customer Engineering, Customer Executive Training, and Senior Manager of Product Publications. Affable and dignified, with a gentle and kindly disposition, Tony was his family's patriarch. He was adored by his family and liked by all who knew him. Tony also had a competitive spirit and managed to win at dominoes and gin rummy up until the last few months of his life. Tony loved working in his garden and growing vegetables, which he delighted in sharing with his friends and neighbors. As a skilled carpenter he crafted intricate dollhouses and bird houses that were prized by family members, as well as by charity fundraisers. Fishing on the St. Lawrence River, golfing, bowling, and attending breakfasts and lunches with fellow IBM'ers, the "Lunch Bunch," were activities he enjoyed. Throughout his life, Tony contributed to his community through activities including serving as Ron's Boy Scout leader, and volunteering at Vassar Brothers Hospital, the Wappingers High School PTA, and the Red Oaks Mill Volunteer Fire Department. Tony was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara, his brother Leon Smyrski, two sisters, Helen Krusky and Esther Kibbie, and his grandson Graham Grindlay. He is survived by his son Ronald Smyrski and wife Joyce of Cary, NC; his daughter Sandra Grindlay and husband Jonathan of Lincoln, MA; and grandchildren Daniel Smyrski of Asheville, NC; Brian Smyrski and wife Leigh Ann of Apex, NC; Kate Grindlay Kelly and husband Matthew of Watertown, MA; Graham's wife Rachel Spicer of Quaker Hill, CT; great-grandchildren Maddie Smyrski, Emma Smyrski, and Andrew Smyrski of Apex, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Family Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, January 13th at the Apex Baptist Church, 1103 Salem Street, Apex, NC 27502.
