Anthony J. Harenda
OLEAN - Anthony J. "Tony" Harenda, of River Street, Olean, passed away Thursday (Feb. 16, 2017) at Olean General Hospital, after a short illness. Born on June 16, 1925, in Olean, he was a son of the late Stanley and Louise Solomon Harenda. On Oct. 6, 1951, at Transfiguration Church, he married the former Theresa M. Bosko, who survives. He was a graduate of Olean High School and served with the U.S. Army in Germany as a medic and interpreter. Tony was a fireman with the Olean Fire Department for 36 years, retiring in 1981 as a lieutenant. He was a member of the former Transfiguration Church and a member of St. John's Church. He was a life member of the Pulaski Club. Tony enjoyed gardening, and he loved being a grandfather and telling stories. Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his children, Barbara (Donald) Then of Hebron, Ky., Anthony J. (Rose) Harenda of Olean, Joseph S. (Denise) Harenda of Rock Hill, S.C., and Stephen (Bonnie) Harenda of West Clarksville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1303 E. State St., Olean. Funeral services will be held Monday (Feb. 20, 2017), beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 12:30 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. in St. John's Church. The Rev. John Arozyasami, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. A Scripture wake service will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to St. John's Church or the American Diabetes Association.
