Ann Bates, 68, died suddenly at home in Tucson, AZ on Thursday, February 9, 2017, after open heart surgery. She is survived by loving husband, Rich; son, Justin (Ruth); and precious grandson, Noah. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Young; brother, Bob Young; and mother, Micky Young. Along with countless friends, Ann also leaves behind hundreds of grieving former students from Granite Falls, WA. As one student wrote: "To Mrs. Bates; I know you are on to your next journey, but when the rest of us take that journey, I hope you are there to guide us on our way. Until our paths cross again, I will keep you in my heart." Ann's boundless energy, her intellect, passion for education, movies, The Loft Theatre, bridge, books, art, travel, cooking, and seemingly effortless way of welcoming people into her home, made her special. The travesty is that Ann left us so soon. Special thanks to Dr. Syed Azam, the entire staff of the Tucson Medical Center, the emergency responders from Fire Station 17, and the emergency staff of St. Joseph's Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Planned Parenthood or to the charity of your choice.
