In memory of
Alexandra L. Wigglesworth
Alexandra Margaret Lipsett Wigglesworth, 77, beloved wife of William (Bill) Wigglesworth died Tuesday January 3, 2017 with her family at her side after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. Sandra/Mom/Nanny was born July 24, 1939 at the original Mary A. Alley Hospital in Marblehead, MA which afforded her the title of a True Marbleheader. She was also proud to be able to trace her roots back to the Pilgrims. Sandra grew up in Marblehead eventually living in the house her father built with his own hands after returning from WWII. She graduated from Marblehead High School in 1957 in the same class as her future husband of 53 years. Sandra attended Lake Erie College in Ohio, spending a semester in Grenoble, France (travelling on the original Queen Mary) and graduating in 1961 with a degree in Biology. She returned to her home town whereupon she and Bill (who had just returned from the Army) began to date. They were married on May 25, 1963 at St. Michael's Church in Marblehead. Sandra and Bill began their life and family in Boston where Sandra worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School working on the first kidney transplants. In 1964 Sandra and Bill relocated permanently to Vernon CT to raise their family. Sandra continued to work on kidney transplant research at Hartford Hospital and in 1995 earned her Master's in Allied Health from the University of Connecticut. Sandra cherished times spent on Cape Cod at the beach and sailing on her and Bill's sailboat, Bananaquit, named for a bird she saw on their honeymoon. Her greatest love however was her family and in particular their bi-annual gatherings nicknamed "Nannypalooza" and documenting those special events with scores of photos. Above all, her pride and joy were her six grandchildren who loved their Nanny unequivocally. Besides her husband Bill, Sandra leaves behind her children Wendy Wigglesworth and husband John Lumbruno with grandchildren Anna and Ben Lumbruno of West Hartford, CT; Andrea Cawthorn and Dan Ekstrom of Ellington, CT and grandchildren GM3 Jacob Cawthorn, USCG of Bass Harbor, ME and Leah Cawthorn of Ellington, CT; and Wes Wigglesworth and his wife Sarah with grandchildren Austen and Cooper Wigglesworth of Amesbury, MA. She also leaves her brother-in- law Bob Wigglesworth of Manchester, MA, sister-in-law Susan Johnson of Wolcott, CO, a close cousin, Maryann O'Rourke and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Richard and Margaret (Gilbert) Lipsett and most recently by her brother Gerry Lipsett. The family would like to thank the staff of Hartford Hospital in the ICU and on CB2, especially the nurses and PCAs who helped us through this difficult time with their outstanding care and compassion. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church of Vernon, 695 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT, on Saturday January 14, 2017 at 12 Noon. Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home has care of the arrangements. Burial will be in Marblehead at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Sandra's name to either the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O.
