Merrily Kurtz Hewett
Merrily Kurtz Hewett May 8, 1923 - Jan. 7, 2019 Merrily was born May 8, 1923 to A. Townsend Kurtz and Hazel Hennessy Hogg in Portland. She was raised on her grandparents farm in the Ames area and graduated from Sandy Union High School. She spent one year at Oregon State College (now OSU) before joining the Navy during WWII. She was stationed at Pearl Harbor and has been active in the W.A.V.E.S. (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) and had marched in parades wearing her uniform. Merrily married Virgil W. Hewett Jan. 20, 1951. They enjoyed over 50 years together until his passing in 2004. She is survived by son, Howard C. Hewett (Colleen); daughter, Laura Sue Burge; granddaughter, Kati Jill Weyer (Larry); grandsons, Brad A. Burge (Ryan), Harry Hewett, Pat Hewett; three great-grandsons; and five nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at Mt. Scott Funeral Home in Portland with a graveside commital service at 1 p.m., at Washougal Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
