Merlyn Earnest EAST PEORIA - Merlyn Glenn Earnest, 72, a long-time resident of East Peoria, passed away at 9:37 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Washington Christian Village in Washington. He was born May 13, 1946 in Pekin to Raymond William and Esther R. (Bauer) Earnest. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Michael Earnest. Surviving are four sisters, Diane Earnest of Maryland Heights, Missouri, Donna (Wayne) Simmons and Dorothy (Roger Minson) Thompson, both of East Peoria, and Debra (Bob) Blackwell of Pottsboro, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. A 1964 graduate of East Peoria Community High School, he furthered his education at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, receiving multiple degrees. Merlyn worked for the State of Illinois Department of Education in Springfield as a consultant and teacher certifier. He retired in 2001 with over 30 years of service. Merlyn was a member of the University of Illinois Gizz Kids Wheelchair Basketball Team. He was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. There will be a family service celebrating Merlyn's life at a later date. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
