Lorraine Bittner
BIG RAPIDS -- Lorraine Bittner, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Aug. 30, 2018, at The Brook of Big Rapids. She was one week shy of her 94th birthday. Lorraine was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Reed City, the daughter of William and Eliese (Spierling) Scharlow, and was a graduate of Reed City High School. She was a lifelong resident of Reed City, until moving to The Brook of Big Rapids in March of 2015. On June 15, 1944, she was married in Reed City to Ivan Bittner and they enjoyed 56 years together, until his death in June 2000. In Lorraine's early years she worked for attorney Forrest Washburn and also attorneys Clarence Salin and James Thompson. After her children were of middle school age, she went to work in the office of the Osceola County Register of Deeds, and retired from there in 1986. She was a lifetime member of the Reed City United Methodist Church. Lorraine and Ivan enjoyed many years vacationing with their family and were very involved in square dancing. In their retirement years, they spent many winters in Ellenton, Florida. Lorraine is survived by her two children, daughter, Sue Bittner, of Gloucester, Virginia, and son, James (Diane) Bittner, of Big Rapids; three grandchildren, Troy (Jennifer) Bittner, of Big Rapids, Monica (Jesse) Malcomnson, of LeRoy, and Eliese (Scott) Tilmann, of Custer; four great-grandchildren, Hailey and Landen Bittner and Logan and Tyce Malcomnson; one brother, Jack (Norma) Scharlow, of Reed City; and several nieces and nephews. Her family would like to extend deep gratitude to her caregivers, Spectrum Health Hospice and the staff at The Brook for the loving care and comfort they provided. Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, at the Pruitt Livingston Funeral Home in Reed City with Rev. Ron White officiating. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Lorraine will be laid to rest in the Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lorraine's name may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
