In memory of
LeRoy King Jr.
LeRoy King, Jr. - - LeRoy King, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 11, 2018 at the age of 92. He is survived by his grandson and Hans Cervinka, his partner of 24 years. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, the eldest of two boys, on November 25, 1926. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force) where he served for two and a half years performing clerical duties. Upon his discharge, he moved to New York City, and following in his father's footsteps, a commercial artist, he pursued a career designing, drawing and sewing women's dresses and costumes. In 1947 he married Catherine and they had one daughter and one son. His wife, Catherine, passed away in 1973, his daughter in 2004 and his son in 2013. He took his talent and moved to Los Angeles. In 1969, LeRoy changed careers and joined the staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital where he spent 37 years in the Pathology Department performing clerical and administrative jobs. Shortly after his retirement in 1994, he moved to Palm Springs and, in 2006, joined the Desert Regional Medical Center Volunteer Program. He remained a volunteer, accumulating 5,000 hours of service, until his death. LeRoy enjoyed working on his computer, drawing, playing the piano and an eclectic taste in music. He was also an avid classic movie buff and could tell you intricate information about the vintage movies of the 30s, 40s and 50s. The covers of the DRMC Auxiliary's cookbook, A Taste of Palm Springs, and its companion mug were designed and drawn by LeRoy. He always said he had "a very comfortable feeling volunteering at DRMC. It's like being at home". A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 5 at 2:00 pm at the Hanson House which is on the campus of Desert Regional Medical Center.
