Robert F. Reed M.D.
Robert F. Reed M.D. Jan. 4, 1921 - June 5, 2017 MISHAWAKA - Dr. Robert F. Reed, 96, died June 5, 2017, from natural causes at Hospice House. He was born in a small farmhouse near Rochester, Indiana, to parents, Robert Rush Reed and Margaret Cecelia Keesey of Rochester, Indiana, on January 4, 1921. Robert was raised by his grandparents on their farm near Rochester, which has been in the family since 1858. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 1939. In 1942, Robert felt the call to serve his country in World War II. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and became a navigator/bombardier on the B-25 Mitchell. His squadron, VMB612, flew night bombing missions from Iwo Jima and Saipan in the South Pacific. Thankfully, the passing of the G.I. Bill after WW II allowed Robert to attend Manchester College and then Indiana University School of Medicine. While attending Manchester, he met the love of his life, Barbara Rigby, and they were married on June 2, 1947. They were married for 68 years. After his residency at the Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, CA, Robert and Barbara returned to Indiana in 1953 to start his medical practice in Mishawaka where he was a family physician for over 40 years. After “retirement,” he worked as an FAA Medical Examiner and as a physician at the Life Treatment Center in South Bend. Other contributions to his community include: team doctor for the Mishawaka High School athletics; Chairman of the Mishawaka St. Joseph Hospital Physicians; advocating for fluoride in the Mishawaka municipal water system; and founding member of the Mishawaka Pilots Club. He became a private pilot and flight instructor after WW II and loved helping students learn to fly. He enjoyed flying his own aircraft through the age of 93! He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara, sisters, Barbara Wallace, Rosemary McIntyre, Mary Elizabeth, and brother, John Howard Reed. Surviving are his children, Tamara (Hilary) Asher of Mishawaka, R.J. (Karen) Reed of Brandon, MS, Michele McClead of Mishawaka, Tracy (David) Case of Mishawaka, John (Susan) Reed of North Oaks, MN, sister, Nancy Sriver (Robert) of Mishawaka and Tom Crissler of Texas. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all of the people who provided wonderful assistance and care to Robert over the last few years, allowing him to stay at home. Special thanks to the Center for Hospice Care staff for their kindness and support. Arrangements are being made for a celebration of his life. Contributions in memory of Robert may be made to The Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545; or The Mishawaka Pilots Club, P. O. Box 149, Osceola, IN 46561-0149.
