In memory of
Robert "Basil" DEY
Basil Dey, peacefully, in Port Hope at the age of 95. Basil was the loving husband of Vera Dey (nee Bannister) for 68 years. Cherished father of Alan (Gay), Keith (Janice), Martin (June) and Sharon (Scott Pickering). Unforgettable 'Pa/Poppa' to Nicole, Michael, Samantha, Veronica, Adrienne, Brandon, Ashley and Coady and to 13 great grandchildren. Basil spent his childhood years in Saskatchewan during the depression in a loving and hard-working farming family prior to his family moving to Port Hope while in his teens. Basil met Vera at a party not long before leaving for his annual trek to log wood in northern Ontario. Part-way to the logging camp, Basil got off the train and returned home to woo and marry his English sweetheart. Together they raised four children while Basil worked at GM as a line foreman. On his off hours he could be found in 'The Shop' welding his magical metal creations, fishing on one of the houseboats that he had built, or watching a good wrestling match on TV. Basil was well-known for his metal art and anyone living in the area would remember his metal milk can man holding up the mailbox on Dale Road. Visitors to their home were amazed by the multitude of metal birds, animals and other creations and were seldom allowed to leave before taking a ride on his 'spinning see-saw of death' with Basil pumping the mechanism from the other seat and smiling that big handsome smile as his unwitting victims disembarked and stumbled away. An early retirement from GM allowed Vera and Basil many happy years of retirement travelling between Port Hope and Florida. The family would like to express our appreciation to the staff at Extendicare in Port Hope for their compassionate and loving care of dad during his stay there. A private celebration will be held at a future date. A quiet man with a beautiful smile, a life well lived.
