Kathleen M. McCabe Veteran Linden educator and fox terrier fan with role in PBS travel series on Italy, 'rarely had time to sit still,' 79 Kathleen M. McCabe, 79, of Springfield, N.J. passed away on April 16, 2018. Kathy will be profoundly missed by her beloved husband of 51 years, Stephen, and her devoted daughter, Kathleen Ann of Denver, Colo. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Marie Nargi. Visitation will be on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bradley Smith and Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, N.J. The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:15 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills, N.J. Born in Newark, N.J., Kathy was a graduate of West Side High School, Newark State College and Kean University, where she earned a master's degree in education. She was a teacher and learning disabilities consultant for Linden public schools for 37 years. In the 1980s, she won a ground-breaking grant to use computers to teach special needs students. Kathy had a contagious enthusiasm for life. She adored wire fox terriers and was loved throughout her life by Chester, Harry, Cooper, Spencer and Phineas. Kathy rarely had time to sit still. Following her retirement, she designed award-winning jewelry for Dream of Italy Designs. She recently created Tubes of Life jewelry to benefit bladder cancer research. Kathy loved to play tennis and pickleball, cook, make wine, travel and volunteer with the Artists Mentoring Group. She made dozens of trips to Italy with her daughter, the host of the PBS travel series Dream of Italy, and is featured in an episode about their ancestral hometown Castelvetere sul Calore. Kathy was devoted to the town's patron saint Madonna delle Grazie.
