KARL A. CHAPSKY
CHAPSKY, Karl A. Of Newton MA, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2017 at 90 years of age. He was predeceased by his wife Svetlana Chapsky and his daughter Ana Sperling. He is survived by his daughter Tatiana Chapsky; his grandsons Georg von Sperling and Daniel Chapsky; and his niece Inna Davidovich and her family. Karl was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He spent his younger years traveling the world with his parents working as Russian diplomats. After his parents were arrested in the Soviet purges, Karl grew up in an orphanage. At 17, he was drafted into the Soviet Army and served in the Far East during WWII. After the army he received his bachelor's degree from Moscow Civil Engineering Institute followed by PhD in the structural engineering. He worked in research and teaching. In 1978 Karl with his family came to the USA as a refugee. He worked as an engineer in a several Boston area companies, including: Simpson, Gumpertz and Heger; Badger; Stone and Webster and others. He loved traveling and enjoyed visiting different corners of his new home country. Having keen analytical mind and engaging personality he had a lot of friends who knew they can rely on him for advice and thoughtful assistance. In retirement Karl volunteered at JCC and was very appreciated by his ESL students. In his later years he enjoyed living at Scandinavian Living Center. Interment is at Newton Cemetery at 791 Walnut Street, Newton on Saturday February 25 at 12 p.m. Celebration of life will follow. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
