McCarthy, USMC, Lt. Col. John Joseph (Jack) Lt. Col. John (Jack) Joseph McCarthy, USMC October 31, 1928 - February 1, 2019 Lieutenant Colonel John (Jack) Joseph McCarthy, USMC, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Tustin, CA on February 1, 2019 surrounded by his family. Jack's loving wife of 50 years, Maureen Haupt McCarthy, passed away in 2004. He is survived by his companion, June Pye; five children, Karen McCarthy Edmondson (Rod Edmondson), Brian McCarthy (Michele Grenda McCarthy), Carole McCarthy Montgomery, Paul McCarthy (Sherri McCarthy), Michael McCarthy (Kimmie Worley McCarthy); eight grandchildren, Travis Lilley, Sean McCarthy, Matthew McCarthy, CPT Aaron Montgomery, MD, Amanda McCarthy Louter, Ian Montgomery, Courtney McCarthy and Scarlett McCarthy; great granddaughter, Leilah Hensley-Riccardo (Lilley); extended family, Lisa, Glenn, and Shannon Lowry; and Hawaiian ohana, Mahi'ai Naihe, Lawai'a Naihe, Pahoa Naihe, Ihe Naihe, and all the Naihe family. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dianne McCarthy Naihe (Charlie Naihe) and son-in-law Timothy F. Montgomery. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946, when he was seventeen years old. He served as a Diesel engine mechanic on the submarine USS Bergall, studied at Temple University, and went on to graduate from Naval Flight School in 1954. During his career he flew an AD-1 Skyraider and A4D Skyhawk. In 1962, Jack graduated from USC where he went on to train hundreds of new pilots. After his final command he went on to serve as the Navy's Western Area Regional Air Space Officer at the FAA. By the time he retired in 1975, Jack had completed 29 years of services, two combat tours, 312 combat missions, 3,500 flight hours and earned a Distinguished Fly Cross, Bronze Star, and 19 air medals. He was also a Commanding Officer of the VMA 214 Black Sheep Squadron, one of the most esteemed flying squadrons in United State history. In 1964, Jack and Maureen bought a house in Tustin and resided there for fifty-five years. He was a Real Estate Manager at Seven Gables Real Estate and served for several years on the Tustin Planning Committee. On weekday mornings you could find him drinking coffee with his friends and solving the world's problems at K's Donuts. His dedication and sense of humor will be missed by all.
