In memory of
Townsend, Johanna Johanna Avis Townsend went to be with our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ on Jan. 3, 2019 at her home in Newport Beach, California. It was after a long battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer. She was 76 years old. Johanna was born on the 4th of July, 1942, in Coquille, Oregon. She was the first of five children born to John Estile Pinkston and Jean Evelyn Hudson. She graduated from Coquille High School in 1960 and at the urging of her father to leave home at age eighteen, moved to California. There she lived with her grandparents in Fullerton until moving onto campus at the then Southern California College (SCC). She obtained a degree in Literature and became a 5th grade teacher for Garden Grove Unified School District. She later went back to school and obtained a Masters in Theology from Vanguard University (formerly SCC) in 1996. Johanna received the LORD at the First Assembly of God Church of Coquille at age 13. She would then devote her life to evangelizing children. She met her Husband Jim Townsend at Calvary Chapel in 1972 and they were married in 1973. In 1983 she became Children's Pastor at Newport Mesa Christian Center. In 1990 she received the Excellence Award at the annual Children's Pastor Conference. She helped start Royal Family Kid's Camp (a camp for abused kids) and wrote the entire curriculum for the first few years. In 1996 she founded For Kid's Only, a nonprofit devoted to helping children's programs at churches and outreach groups. She also helped start Kids at Heart, worked with Teen MOPS, Village Well, and served on the boards of the Dream Center LA and Vanguard University. Not to mention helping in or organizing over 30 Vacation Bible Schools. Johanna is survived by her husband of 45 years Jim Townsend; children: Alison (43), April (42), Adelaide (12); and her grandchildren: Tallinn (14), Cardiff (10), Oslo (8), and Renny (6).
